Culture Cape Breton
The coast of Cape Breton was discovered in 1497 by the Italian “Giovanni Caboto (John Cabot)”, who sailed under British flag. The Cabot Trail, one of the world’s most famous coastal drives, was named after him.
The first settlements on Cape Breton date back to the
17th Century and were mainly French Colonists. During this time Cape Breton was called “Ille Royale” with Louisbourg as its capital. The French build the first lighthouse in Canada and one of the first in North America. During the middle of the century, the British started to conquer Cape Breton. They conquered Fortress of Louisbourg in 1758 and deconstructed it in the following years. Today the “fortress of Louisbourg” has been reconstructed in many areas and is one of the main attractions on Cape Breton Island. Since then Nova Scotia has seen a steady rise of west-European immigrants and tourists. The Native Mi’kmaq regained a large portion of land after their battles with the British and French. Even today the Canadian culture, mainly in music, art and architecture, retains a large portion of its English and French influence.
But you will certainly find influences of immigrants from Ireland, Scotland, Holland, Germany and many other nations. Because
Canadians understood to be tolerant and interested in other cultures, Canada has become a well functioning multicultural mosaic. Travelers can explore the historical aspects of Canadian life and culture in many areas. Many tourists are drawn to the historic monuments of the Fortress of Louisbourg, Iona Village and the Gaelic College, which still teaches the Gaelic language. The annual Broad Cove Concert and the famous Antigonish Highland Games are a true testament to history and culture. The Canada Cultural Center in Auld’s Cove displays and showcases art from various Canadian artists as well as native art.
