Geography Canada
Canada is situated north of the United States of America and borders the Pacific on the west and the Atlantic to the east. Canada is the second largest country in the world, measuring around 9.984.670 square kilometers, which is almost the size of Europe. Around 90% of the ca. 33 Million Canadians live in the southern part of Canada, which has the largest cities. The population density of Canada is around 3.3 people per square kilometer (compared with ca. 230 people per square kilometer in Germany). The capital of Canada is Ottawa. The country is divided into 10 provinces and three territories. One of these provinces is the Atlantic Province Nova Scotia.
Geography Nova Scotia
Nova Scotia, with its capital Halifax, is one of the four Atlantic provinces of Canada. The “Maritime” provinces include, aside of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Newfoundland/Labrador. Nova Scotia is the second smallest province of Canada with a total area of 55,284 square kilometers. But because Nova Scotia consists of a peninsula in the Atlantic Ocean to the west and Cape Breton in the north-east, the ocean is never more than 56km away. The population of Nova Scotia is ca. 913,462 (2006) which equals to a population density of roughly 17.3 people per square kilometer. The climate of Nova Scotia is heavily influenced by the Atlantic and the Gulf current. Adding to the rather moderate climate is the fact that Nova Scotia sits on the same latitude as southern France. We would like to introduce Cape Breton in Nova Scotia’s north-east.
Geography Cape Breton
Cape Breton Island is located north-east of Nova Scotia’s mainland and is separated from the mainland through the “Strait of Canso”. Cape Breton Island was connected to the mainland in 1955 with the construction of the “Canso Causeway”/
Cape Breton Island borders the Gulf of St. Lawrence on its northern and western coasts. The west-coast is also the eastern border of the “Northumberland Strait”. The eastern and southern coasts are on the Atlantic.
Cae Breton Island has an area of ca. 10.311 square kilometers and is home to roughly 147.454 (2001) people. This translates into a population density of roughly 14.3 people per square kilometer.
The Halifax International Airport can be reached in the summer directly from Germany in ca. 6-7 hours. Cape Breton Island is only about 2.5 hours away from the airport. The highways are well expanded and you will hardly be stressed driving due to the low traffic density.
