Landscape of Cape Breton
The landscape of Cape Breton is very diverse and offers a wide variety of rocky coasts, breathtaking beaches, rolling hills, vast forests, lakes, rivers, and brooks, as well as mountains and plateaus. The southern part of Cape Breton is, for the most part, fairly flat and consists mainly of farms and state owned forests. The further north one travels, the more rolling hills and mountains begin to define the landscape. The best way to enjoy the variety of the island is by taking a drive along the five “Scenic Drives”.
- “The Bras d’Or Lake Scenic Drive”, which will lead you around the famous Bras d’Or Lake, offering stunning views over the Bras d’Or Lake’s scenery. This Region is known for its large population of Bald Eagles that nest along the lake.
- The already mentioned “Cabot Trail”, which will take you through the Cape Breton Highlands on a ca. 300km long road through the Cape Breton Highlands National Park as well as along breathtaking coastlines
- The “Fleur-de-lis Trail”, will take travelers along ca. 263km of the south-eastern coast along many parks and attractions as well as through many picturesque fishing communities and ends at the Fortress of Louisbourg.
- The slightly less traveled “Marconi Trail” covers roughly 60km of rough eastern coastline all the way to Glace Bay.
- Last but not least the “Ceilidh Trail” (pronounced kay-lee), which follows the western coast for roughly 107km. The “Ceilidh Trail” follows Route 19, also known as the “Sunset Coast” through many communities that are famous for their music and Celtic culture.
Cape Breton Highlands
The highest mountains on Cape Breton can be found in the Cape Breton
Highlands on the northern most part of the island. Visitors will notice the landscape changing and becoming rather mountainous reminiscent of the Scandinavian Fjords. Travelers will be mesmerized by the beautiful landscapes along the serpentine mountain roads leading from the highest peaks to the countless beaches on the Atlantic. This mountain road has gained international fame as one of the most beautiful coastal roads in the world, the “Cabot Trail”. The Cabot Trail was named after the Italian explorer “Giovanni Caboto (John Cabot)” who was the first European to explore Cape Breton Island in 1497, sailing under English flag. It would be a shame to not explore and discover the astonishing landscape along the many hiking trails that lead travelers right by the indigenous wildlife, such as Bald-Eagles, Moose and Deer. Along the way, many small and cozy fishing villages invite visitors along the Cabot Trail to rest and enjoy local specialties in many restaurants. But if the excitement of the Cabot Trail was not enough, many local fishers are more than happy to take tourists out on the water for whale watching tours along Cape Breton’s northern shores.
Lakes and Rivers Cape Breton
Most lakes on Cape Breton are deep and thus ideal for water sport activities and fishing. The Bras d’Or Lake is one of the largest saltwater lakes in the world, measuring over 1.100 square kilometers. Two natural canals connect the Bras d’Or Lake with the open ocean and offers a fjord-like character with light tides. The Bras d’Or lake is a favored destination for sailing with countless islands and picturesque bays. Cape Breton Island also offers many fresh water lakes and rivers, like Lake Ainslie and the Mira River or Margaree River. The Margaree River is especially well suited for fly fishing and salmon fishing.
